What could be better than heading to the beach for some fun in the sun after a day of classes? While you can’t experience this when you take classes in the Midwest, you’ll enjoy the fresh air and sunshine when you enroll in a program in the Golden State. California offers a number of opportunities for those interested in human resources. You can learn more about balancing budgets, how to hire new employees, what to do with problem employees and even how to handle conflicts in the office. With human resource programs in California, there is no limit to what you can learn.

Golden Gate University

Edward S. Ageno School of Business

Golden Gate University is one of several colleges in the United States that started at the YMCA. Young men living in the area met at a local branch of the YMCA for several years before the college built a campus of its own. That move led to the school opening an Evening College, which let students take classes at night after working during the day. Though the school maintains a campus in San Francisco, it also owns and operates three other campuses and offers online classes. The Edward S. Ageno School of Business, which dates back to 1908, offers courses on human resources and management.

Master of Science in Human Resource Management

When developing its Master of Science Human Resource Management degree program, the college looked closely at the guidelines established by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The SHRM wants students to understand the differences between employers and employees and how to effectively draw attention to those differences. Potential outcomes for students of this program include:

  • Understanding what can happen with proper or improper management of employees.
  • Knowing how to process demographic data found with newer software and forms of technology.
  • Looking at problems on a global scale.
  • Finding solutions to effectively manage employees and employers.

The school has a high graduation rate and discovered that 83-percent of its students graduated the program within three years. When calculating the number of graduates finishing the program after five years, that percentage increases to 86-percent. The school also offers its students the chance to finish a human resource or management internship off campus.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a Human Resources Concentration

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is an advanced program designed for students with an undergraduate degree in business. New students can choose from a number of concentrations, including a human resource management concentration. Students take two advanced courses on human resource management and two courses from nine other offerings. Those courses include compensation and administration, managing people in international settings, labor relations and employment law. Students who take an internship can use that internship in place of one of those classes. When you take classes at Golden Gate University, you also need to take a minimum of 12 units in accounting, economics, psychology or other topics. The college hopes that offering different concentrations will help students focus on a specific area that will assist them later. Many of the graduates of this school work in the finance field, for large corporations, in law offices and in other business settings.

Bachelor of Arts in Management (BAM) with a Human Resources Concentration

Completing a Bachelor of Arts in Management is a good option for those interested in working in the business world. At Golden Gate University, you can select a concentration in human resource management that lets you learn more about both fields at the same time. To complete your BAM degree, you must take labor-management relations, personal recruitment, selection and placement, compensation decision making and training methods and administration courses. As a member of a company’s human resources department, you must know how to effectively train new employees and prepare them for their jobs. Your courses will give you a better understanding of both managing employees and working with existing employees. Students can also take independent study and special topic courses. Special topic courses are only available during certain semesters, and the topic studied changes from semester to semester. Graduation from the program requires completion of 51 units or more in higher level classes.

Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) with a Human Resources Concentration

The Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) degree is similar to the Bachelor of Arts degree, but students typically spend more time in classes that involve research, science or math. Students can choose from different concentrations, and if you choose the human resource management concentration, you need to take an additional 33 units of courses relating to that topic. You will learn the importance of hiring the right people for a company and the issues associated with problem employees in the personnel recruitment, selection and placement courses, and you can learn more about finding solutions to problems between employees and employers in the labor-management relations course. Many students also take a course on business employment law, which focuses on teaching them how to avoid hiring practices that might violate state, local or national laws. Others supplement their education with an internship or direct study course during one of their later years.

Keller Graduate School of Management – California

Specialized Master’s Degree Programs

The Keller Graduate School of Management is a chain of graduate schools located across the country. Owned by DeVry University, the schools offer students the chance to attend one of more than 90 courses or take classes online. Most students enjoy taking classes through these schools because they can transfer credits to any school if they move or change locations. The university first opened in the 1930s in Chicago, but after The Bell & Howell Education Group purchased the school in the 1980s, it changed its name. All undergraduate schools now carry the name DeVry, while many of the graduate schools use the Keller name.

Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM)

Before adding the Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) program to its roster of classes, the school looked at the Society for Human Resource Management guidelines. This let the school see what the SHRM recommended for managers and implement those recommendations into its program. Keller lets its students study at any location, but students can also take a combination of online and traditional classes. Competition of the program requires 18 credit hours of required management courses, 15 credit hours of human resource courses and 12 credit hours of electives. The capstone project required by the program is a project that students typically do in one of their last two semesters. The college asks that students pick a topic, do research into that topic, find ways to connect their studies to the topic and present the research for course credit. Some students also take an internship during their last year in the program.

La Sierra University

The Tom and Vi Zapara School of Business

The Southeastern California Conference acquired several hundred acres of land in California with the intention of building a new school on that land. Originally known as La Sierra Academy, the school went from a secondary school to a normal school and later became a junior college. When the college merged with another school, it opened its School of Business and Management, which is now The Tom and Vi Zapara School of Business. The campus is still home to some of the college’s first few buildings, but it spent more than $20 million constructing a new building on campus. It now has an enrollment of just over 4,000 students.

BS: Business Management: Human Resource Management

Looking for an undergraduate program that combines leadership, management and business sense in one program? La Sierra University offers a Human Resource Management program that combines all of these elements and many more. Students can join the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team or other campus groups, they can do internships in the business world and they can work with their instructors on independent study projects. Students take 10 courses each semester, and the school offers multiple selections and concentrations for those enrolled.

Loyola Marymount University

College of Business Administration

Loyola Marymount University would not exist if it weren’t for the St. Vincent’s College for Boys, which opened in 1865. During the early part of the 20th century, a group of Jesuits took over the maintenance and operation of the school, which eventually led to the school admitting older males and later female students. After phasing out the academy portion of the school, it became a college and later earned the rank of university. U.S. News & World Report ranked the college as one of the three best schools in the west, and it also ranks high in terms of student happiness.

MBA: Human Resources

Designed for students with at least two years of work experience, the MBA: Human Resources is a program open to students with an undergraduate degree and a high score on the GMAT. Those with a minimum of six years of work experience after college can apply for the advanced MBA program. Loyola Marymount University asks that students complete the MBA program within a set period of time, and most students finish the program in six years or less. Unless you have high grades in certain classes, the school requires that you take nine courses, including business statistics, management and organizational behavior, marketing management and financial management. You can also choose an emphasis and take courses relating to that topic. For the human resource management emphasis, you need to take at least three courses in that concentration. The program also lets you choose a second emphasis or concentration after completing your first.

Human Resource Management – MBA

Students attending the MBA program can also apply for the Human Resources Management Certificate Program. Launched as a way to help people already working in the field, this program takes place over just 12 weeks. Available through the Loyola Marymount University Extension, students can enroll in the program in the fall or spring semester. Classes meet every Wednesday for 3.5 hours, and students have the chance to take a short break in the middle of the class. Professors cover topics relating to labor laws, keeping costs under control, compensation, benefits and employee relations. If you completed your MBA at another school, are in the middle of an MBA program or work in the business field, you can enroll in the program. Students write and research papers, work with others in the program and complete assignments each week. After the program ends, those with a passing grade receive a Human Resource Management certificate.
